Tiger Queen

“Carole Baskin killed her husband, whacked him.” — Megan Thee Stallion, “Savage”

The Tiger Queen is a 9” X 12” tribute to the golden age illustrator C. Coles Phillips. The assignment was to recreate an illustration from the Golden Age of Illustration (1880s-1930s) but with an added twist to the concept. C Coles Phillips was an American artist known for his “fade-away” style in his artwork. By manipulating the use of negative space, Phillips created beautiful works of the female figure, becoming extremely well published as an artist. The artwork pictured below was the original Phillips work that Tiger Queen is based off of. The unique twist to the original concept was to emulate a reference to the Netflix hit docuseries, Tiger King. The series follows the wild life stories of some of the main big cat carriers within the US including Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin. This prompted an exploration into the missing persons case of Don Lewis, husband of animal rights and big cats activist, Carole Baskin. Rumor has it, she fed her husband to her tigers. Thus, the creation of Tiger Queen.
